Laminate is a budget-friendly, scratch-resistant floor for dry rooms. In damp New Orleans homes, a vapor barrier underneath and quick cleanup of spills keep it flat.
Laminate is a photo of wood or stone on a dense fiberboard core, under a hard clear wear layer. It costs less than many wood floors and stands up well to scratches from dogs and chairs, which makes it popular in bedrooms, living rooms and rentals around New Orleans. It floats over an underlayment, so it can go over a slab or a flat wood subfloor without glue or nails.
Its weak spot is the core. Fiberboard swells if water sits on it or soaks into the seams, and once the edges puff up they do not go back down. Newer water-resistant lines seal the edges better and give you more time to wipe up a spill, but they are not built for standing water. We do not suggest laminate for full bathrooms or laundry rooms, or for slab homes that have flooded before.
On a concrete slab, laminate needs a vapor barrier under the underlayment, or an underlayment with one built in. On a raised house, the subfloor must be firm and dry. Damp air from a crawl space can still reach the planks, so a sound vapor barrier on the ground under the house helps. Expansion gaps at the walls let the floor move with the seasons.

Yes, when it is installed over a vapor barrier with expansion gaps at the walls. Standing water is the real risk, not damp air alone.
Can swollen laminate be fixed?
Swollen planks have to be replaced. If spare planks are available, a few can be swapped without redoing the room.
