Floor Care and Flooring Warranties Explained

Good care keeps a floor looking new for longer, and knowing how warranties work keeps you from losing one. This is general information, not legal advice; your product's own terms always come first.

Can I use a steam mop on LVP or hardwood?

Most flooring makers say not to use a steam mop on hardwood, and many say the same for vinyl plank and laminate. Steam pushes heat and moisture into seams, which can swell wood and laminate and weaken vinyl's locking edges. Using one may also void the product's warranty. Check the care sheet for your floor.

What is the best way to clean hardwood without damaging the finish?

Clean hardwood with a dry microfiber mop or a vacuum with the beater bar off, and use a cleaner made for finished wood floors, sprayed lightly on the mop, not the floor. Avoid wet mopping, vinegar, oil soaps and wax on modern polyurethane finishes. Mats at the doors catch the sand and grit that wear finish fastest.

What does a lifetime LVP warranty actually cover?

A lifetime vinyl plank warranty from the manufacturer usually covers defects in the product and the wear layer wearing through under normal home use, not scratches, dents, fading from sun, or damage from water under the floor. Many are prorated, so the amount paid shrinks over time, and many cover materials only, not labor. Read the manufacturer's own terms for your product before you buy.

What voids a flooring warranty?

Common things that void a flooring warranty are an install that did not follow the maker's instructions, skipping the slab moisture test, the wrong underlayment, no expansion gaps, steam mops or banned cleaners, and damage from leaks or floods. Keep your receipt, the product name and lot number, and photos of the install.

Does the installer warranty their labor, and for how long?

Some installers offer a workmanship warranty on their labor, but the length varies and it is separate from the manufacturer's product warranty. Ask what the installer's labor warranty covers, for how long, and get it in writing in the contract. If nothing is written, there is no clear promise.

Floors peeling, separating or gapping months later: who pays?

Who pays depends on the cause. A product defect points to the manufacturer, under its warranty. An install mistake, like no expansion gap or a skipped moisture test, points to the installer. Moisture from a leak, a damp crawl space or a flood usually falls on the homeowner or their insurance. Have the floor inspected before arguing about it, keep photos, and send your claim in writing.

How do I keep dogs from scratching the floor?

Keep your dog's nails trimmed short, put rugs or runners in the paths they run, and add felt pads under furniture. A matte finish or a textured, lighter floor hides scratches better. For heavy pet traffic, porcelain tile and vinyl plank with a thick wear layer resist scratching best.

How long should a hardwood finish last?

A hardwood finish usually lasts several years in busy rooms before it needs a recoat, and longer in bedrooms. How long depends on traffic, pets, grit and the finish type. Recoat before the finish wears through to bare wood, and you can put off a full sand for years.

How do I care for tile grout in a humid bathroom?

To keep grout clean in a humid bathroom, run the exhaust fan during and after showers, wipe standing water, and clean grout with a mild cleaner and a soft brush. Seal cement grout if the maker calls for it, and reseal on its schedule. Dark spots that come back often are mildew from moisture, and better ventilation is the real fix.

Where do I complain about a flooring contractor or product?

For a contractor, start with a written complaint to the company, then file with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors if it is registered or licensed, and with the Louisiana Attorney General's Consumer Protection Section. For a product, file a claim with the manufacturer under its warranty terms. Keep copies of the contract, receipts and photos.
