New Orleans weather is hard on floors in one main way: damp air, almost all year. Add summer heat, strong sun through tall windows, and the chance of flooding, and the floor you choose matters.
What flooring is best for high humidity?
Porcelain tile and vinyl plank are the best floors for high humidity, because neither absorbs water from the air. Engineered hardwood handles humidity better than solid wood. Solid wood and laminate can work too, but they need the house kept cool and dry with the air conditioning running.
Will hardwood shrink or gap in dry winter heat?
Wood floors here may gap a little during short dry spells in winter, when the heat runs and the air dries out, but the bigger risk in New Orleans is swelling in damp months. Small seasonal gaps close again when the humidity returns. A floor installed at the house's normal humidity moves least.
Do I need a humidifier or dehumidifier to protect wood floors?
In New Orleans, a dehumidifier is far more useful for wood floors than a humidifier. The air conditioner removes most moisture in summer, but turning it off for a trip can let a closed house swell boards in a few weeks. Keep it on, set to a sensible temperature, and run a dehumidifier in damp rooms or crawl spaces if needed.
What flooring holds up if the house floods again?
Porcelain or ceramic tile set on a slab holds up best in a flood, because it can be cleaned and kept after the water drains and the slab dries. Waterproof vinyl plank often has to be lifted so the slab and walls can dry, but sound planks can sometimes be reinstalled. Carpet, laminate and most wood floors soaked by flood water have to be thrown out. Flood water is dirty, so anything it soaked needs cleaning or removal.
Will LVP buckle or fade in heat or strong sun?
Vinyl plank can expand, gap or fade where strong afternoon sun hits it through tall windows or glass doors. Blinds or curtains, a plank made for sunny rooms, and proper gaps at the walls help. The flooring maker's terms often say what temperature range the floor needs.
Can floors go on a porch, enclosed gallery or sunroom?
A closed-in porch, gallery or sunroom can take tile or vinyl plank if it is part of the cooled house. If it is not cooled, or is open to the weather, porcelain tile is the safest floor, because damp air and temperature swings will move wood and laminate. Check the subfloor too: old porches were often built to drain, with a slope, and may need framing work before a new floor.
How long do floors need to acclimate?
Most wood floors need to acclimate for at least a few days in the house before install, with the air conditioning running, but the maker's instructions set the exact rule. Wood is checked with a moisture meter, not only by the calendar. Many vinyl planks need little or no acclimation; check the product sheet.
Does the crawl space under a raised house affect the floor?
Yes, a damp crawl space is one of the most common causes of cupped floors in raised New Orleans homes. Standing water, bare dirt with no vapor barrier, and blocked vents all push moisture up into the boards. Fixing drainage under the house and laying a ground barrier often solves a floor problem without touching the floor itself.
