HomeGuide's national figures put a typical flooring install at 1 to 3 days. The real time for your job depends on the size, the material, and how much prep the slab or subfloor needs.
How long does it take to install floors in a whole house?
A whole house usually takes from several days to a few weeks, depending on size, material and prep. Vinyl plank or laminate over a flat slab goes fastest. Tile takes longer because of setting and grout time, and solid hardwood that is sanded and finished on site adds drying days. Leveling, subfloor repair or a slab that has to dry can add days at the start.
How long to install LVP in a 3 bedroom house?
Vinyl plank in a typical 3 bedroom house often takes only a few days, if the slab is flat and the old floor is easy to remove. Tearing out glued tile, leveling dips in the slab, or replacing soft subfloor in a raised home adds time. The quote should give a schedule.
Do I need to move my furniture before install?
Ask before the job whether furniture moving is included. Either way, empty closets, shelves and cabinets that sit on the floor, and put away small items, breakables and electronics. Beds, sofas and dressers are usually moved as part of the job when the quote says so.
Do installers remove baseboards, toilets and appliances?
Most installers pull baseboards or shoe molding, and many remove and reset toilets and slide out the stove and refrigerator, but check that it is in the quote. Ice maker and water lines should be shut off. Gas appliances are best moved by someone qualified to disconnect them. Dishwashers often stay, with the floor run up to them.
How long before I can walk on new tile?
Most thinset and grout makers say light foot traffic is fine after about 24 hours, with heavier use and furniture later. Humid weather can slow curing. Follow the times on the products used, and keep heavy appliances off new tile until the setting materials have cured.
Do I need a permit to replace flooring?
Replacing a floor covering usually does not need a building permit around New Orleans. The City of New Orleans lists the removal and replacement of deteriorated floorboards as exempt, and Jefferson Parish and the City of Gretna list tiling and carpeting as exempt finish work in houses. Work on joists or framing under the floor can need a permit, so it is checked first.
Should we do one room or the whole floor at once?
Here is a typical case: a family in a slab home wants vinyl plank in the living room now and the bedrooms next year. Doing the whole floor at once means one product lot with matching color, no transition strips at every doorway, one furniture shuffle and one disruption. Doing one room at a time spreads the cost, but the same plank may be gone or have a different shade later. If you split it, buy enough extra planks now for the later rooms, or plan a clean break at a doorway.
How long does refinishing add to a move-in date?
A full sand and finish adds several days, longer with oil-based finish or in damp weather, and rugs should wait longer still. If you are moving into an older home, refinish before the furniture arrives. Empty rooms are faster and cleaner to sand.
